“The Hiroshima bomb (thirteen KT) produced third degree burns two miles from ground zero. A one-MT bomb (seventy-seven times bigger) would produce third-degree burns 1,155 miles away from ground zero.” Statement made by a lecturer at a public educational meeting.
NUCLEAR WAR FACT: A one-MT weapon will produce third degree burns up to only 7.5 miles from ground zero.
A one-MT weapon does have seventy-seven times the mega tonnage but will produce third degree burns up to only 7.5 miles from ground zero. This is true because as one increases the mega tonnage by a factor of ten, the danger radius increases by a factor of two. In addition to this, it takes 7.1 cal/cm2 (calories per square centimeter) of skin to produce a third-degree burn from a twenty-KT weapon, but it takes l0 cal/cm2 to inflict the same degree of burn from a one-MT weapon.
